Protection of personal information (POPI)

Overview

The protection of personal information POPI legislation was passed into law on 6 November 2013.

There will be a compliance grace period of 1 year which may be extended to 3 years.

Instead of simply waiting for a commencement date for the act we may want see if we fulfill the requirements for lawful processing of personal information.

Almost all companies and certainly all organisations who have and process people (and company) personal information must give attention to this.

Each one of us has the right to not have their personal information misused and although it will require some thought and some change it's a good thing

How do you start to tackle this subject?

All organisations will need to examine processes and use of personal information to make sure privacy related risks are being managed correctly.

Fortunately there's a lot of information "out there" some of which is essential reading.

Government has obviously published their official information ...

... and many of the larger accounting and legal institutions provide comments and easier reading guides.
